Event Information

Warrumbungle Night Sky and Telescope Viewing Tour

View the planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies through telescopes.

Constellations pointed out with a laser pointer

Includes 1 photo of a nebula or the Moon taken through the 20" Telescope with your own Canon or Nikon DSLR camera only if you have one.

Your Tour Gudie will be Brett Richards.

This is an outdoors activity and Coonabarabran can get very cold at night in the winter months. Please bring plenty of warm clothing. Sometimes mozzies in the warmer months so wear long pants, shoes, and lpng sleeve shirt, and spray on some aerogard.

IMPORTANT

Please take note of the directions to find us as we cannot be located with a GPS. We can be hard to find in the dark so if unsure do a drive by in the daylight.

Travelling from Coonabarabran.  We are 9.0km from the clocktower in Coonabarabran. Head west from the clocktower along Dalgarno St. Take the 2nd right into namoi st then the 3rd left into Eden St, then follow out of town for 8.4km. The road changes name to Timor Rd (ignore what road the gps tells you as its incorrect). We are on the left. If you see the Warrumbungle Mountain Motel on the right you have gone to far. You will see some kangaroo signs. These signs are not joking! We are 400m before it.

If you are travelling from the Warrumbungle National Park, it is about 24km. Head towards Coonabarabran. When you exit the park you will see the Siding Spring turn off. From there it is another 14km towards Coonabarabran.Just before us you will see the Mountain Motel on the left. We are 400m past that on the right. Take your time as it is kangaroo country.

When booking its important to leave an Australian Mobile phone number you will have with you on the day so we can contact you if there is a change or cancellation. If you dont have one, email starr_peter@hotmail.com with a way of contacting you whether its a motel phone number or email address. Do not leave your own home number unless you are a local resident.

This is very important as we will need to contact you an hour before the show if we decide to cancel due to overcast skies. Phone reception is very poor or non existant in some areas out of town. If its cloudy please check an hour before if you can by finding some phone range. There will be no one at the observatory if its cancelled to advise you.

Overcast evenings  (IMPORTANT PLEASE READ)

The show is weather permitting.

We cancel the show if we think it will be overcast for most of the show.

It may also be cancelled if there is an equipment breakdown, covid-19 restriction changes, or a sick tour guide.

An email is sent and a text message is sent approximately an hour before the start time advising if the show is cancelled.

This is sent to the Australian mobile number and email address you provided when booking.

There will be no one on site if the show is cancelled so please check for a text or email before leaving.

Do not book If your travel time is more than 1 hour as its a long way to turn back if we cancel the show unless you are planning to stay in the area anyway for other reasons.

If it is cloudy and you have not received a text by an hour before start time please text on 0488 425 112 asking if the show has going ahead or not as if it is cancelled there may be no one there to advise you.

A refund is given when the show is cancelled. The credit card fee is not refunded.

Weather by its nature  can be very unpredictable at times. Sometimes we get it wrong with the weather we think it will be cloudy. We cancel the show. Then it ends up being clear. The opposite can happen as well where we expect it to clear and it does not. In that case we still proceed and do an astronomy talk and show you objects as they appear. There is no refund in this case. So apologies in advance if this occurs. We have to make a call on it an hour before as it takes about an hour to set up all the equipment.
