Event Information

The Artist's Eye is an exploration of aesthetics, art and the relationship between local artists and their place of work & living. It seeks to inform the attendees personal artistic appreciation as well as providing an insight into a fascinating region through the lens of its history and its artists.

Jan Irvine Nealie, whose work Bones of Paths (painted textile) is held in the National Gallery of Australia, will facilitate interactions with local creatives such as contemporary artist, Luke Scibberas, at Hill End, Jan's husband, Anagama master Chester Nealie, in their magnificent property Gulgong, landscape artists, Ross and Judy Kurtz, in their mudbrick Mudgee home as well as artisans and makers throughout the region. Each day is filled with a conversation around art and creativity. How all these people have interpreted the country of Mudgee, Gulgong, Rylstone + Hill End, and then enhanced the local cultural environment with their work, informs much of The Artist's Eye.

The Mudgee Region is powerful country that breathes with story and character: from poet Henry Lawson to the gold miners of Gulgong and Hill End; from the the local Aboriginal people to the heart-wrenching tale of Jimmy Governor (the basis for the classic movie, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith).

Added to this roster of creative talents is a visit to the Rosby Wines Cellar Door & Sculpture Garden, a place where wine, food and art meet in a delightful fusion. The final night showcases local performer, Jude Bowler, and the quirky delights of the Rusty Owl in Gulgong.

The Ten Dollar Town Motel in Gulgong acts as a home base, perfectly centred in the middle of this wonderful heritage town, allowing for easy explorations into the surrounding towns. You can either bring your own car or travel in the provided bus throughout your week's stay.

Jan Irvine-Nealie will enhance that story by placing it within the broader context of art, its meaning and value. She will encourage attendees to document their experiences with writings, sketches and journaling so as to better absorb and assimilate this profound experience.

The Artist's Eye is perfect for people who seek to deepen their understanding of artistic process. By the travelling to the font of creative inspiration - the artist’s studio; their home; the landscape in which they work; into their thoughts and inspirations – the works can be understood in the context of a whole life experience rather than a single piece of art.
