Event Information

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

Written by Tennessee Williams and Elia Kazan

Starring Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, Karl Malden

A Streetcar Named Desire tells the story of a southern belle, Blanche DuBois, who, after encountering a series of personal losses, leaves her aristocratic background seeking refuge with her sister in a dilapidated New Orleans apartment building. Stella's boorish husband, Stanley, not only regards Blanche's aristocratic affectations as a royal pain but also thinks she's holding out on inheritance money that rightfully belongs to Stella. On the fringes of sanity, Blanche is trying to forget her checkered past and start life anew.

Elia Kazan’s legendary adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play is famed for the brute and unruly power of Brando’s performance.
