Port to Port – Sydney Freight Lines Rail Tour
An Exclusive East Coast Heritage Rail Experience
Step beyond the suburban platforms and into the hidden world of heavy haul rail as East Coast Heritage Rail invites you on a rare “Port to Port” exploration of Sydney’s freight network, from the bustling container docks of Port Botany to the rail network of Port Kembla and then onto Summit Tank.
Your journey begins beneath the grand arches of Central railway station, where we depart Sydney Terminal and head west through the Inner West toward Flemingtons and around Olympic Park then through to Lidcombe and Sefton Junction — gateways to one of the most significant freight corridors in the nation.
From here, our heritage train joins the freight-only lines seldom experienced by passenger trains. We pass through the historic railway precincts of Chullora and Enfield, travelling alongside the developing Sydney South West Metro project, offering a fascinating contrast between modern rail infrastructure and classic heritage travel.
Skirting the edge of Sydney Airport and the industrial heartland of the city, we arrive at Port Botany — Australia’s second-busiest container port. Witness towering cranes, endless container stacks, and the ceaseless movement of intermodal freight as we pause within this vital logistics hub.
Retracing our path to Enfield Yard, we then turn south for one of Australia’s most spectacular railway journeys. Descending the Illawarra Line through the pristine wilderness of Royal National Park, we emerge at the breathtaking coastal cliffs of Stanwell Tops, where the railway clings dramatically above the Pacific Ocean before arriving into the vibrant coastal city of Wollongong.
At Wollongong, enjoy approximately two hours, 50 minutes off the train to explore the town, stroll the harbour, or relax with lunch at one of the many cafés and restaurants or at Coniston for 2 hours 44 minutes or stay on the train for lunch and continue onto Port Kembla.
If you wish to travel to Port Kembla and Summit Tank do not get off at at Wollongong or Coniston. From Port Kembla pass Port Kembla Yard, Cringilia, Lysaghts and then Unanderra via Allans Creek Triangle Loop. From Unanderra the train will ascend the Unanderra to Moss Vale freight line for a 30 minute stop at Summit Tank to enjoy the panoramic views from Peter Abba Lookout, back over Lake Illawarra and Wollongong/Port Kembla environs — an operational highlight few passengers ever experience before commencing our scenic return journey to Sydney with a choice of Wollongong, Thirroul, Sutherland or Central as set down stations.
